Skin Prick Testing

Quick and easy allergy testing

Skin prick testing is the most convenient method of allergy testing. And Dr Hew is fully trained in this procedure. Results are available within 20 minutes so Dr Hew can discuss your results and start planning your treatment straight away.

How does skin prick testing work?

The test is most commonly performed on your forearm. The skin is cleaned of any moisturisers or perfumes before a small prick is made into the skin through a drop of allergen extract. This lets just a small amount of the allergen into your skin.

If you are allergic to the allergen, a small itchy lump will appear within 15 – 20 minutes. Skin prick testing can be a little uncomfortable as you may experience some itching. But this should subside within a few hours.

There are allergies that cannot be tested for with a skin prick test like aspirin, food additives and respiratory (nose, throat) irritants like smoke or perfumes.

What are common allergy symptoms?

Signs of a mild to moderate allergic reaction are:

Tingling mouth
Swelling of the lips, face, eyes
Abdominal pain, vomiting (these are signs of anaphylaxis for insect allergy)
Hives or welts

Signs of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) are:

Swelling of tongue
Difficult/noisy breathing
Wheezing/persistent cough
Swelling/tightness in throat
Dizziness, light-headedness or collapse
Pale and floppy (young children)
Difficulty talking and/or hoarse voice

Don’t wait any longer. Get on top of your allergy symptoms.
